Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is a novel written by Mary Shelley. Mary Shelley started writing the story Frankenstein when she was 18 and the novel was published when she was 19 years old: As a young boy, the man Frankenstein becomes obsessed with studying outdated theories of science that focus on achieving natural wonders. Frankenstein plans to attend university at Ingolstadt Germany. But, a week before his planned departure, Frankenstein's mother dies ironically after curing his sister, Elizabeth, who became ill with scarlet fever. The whole family is aggrieved, and Frankenstein sees the death as his life's first misfortune. At university, Frankenstein excels at chemistry and other sciences and discovers the secret to imbuing the inanimate with life. Frankenstein also becomes interested in galvanism, a technique discovered in the 1790s...While the exact details of the monster's construction are left ambiguous, Frankenstein explains that he collected bones from charnel-houses. Frankenstein also says that the dissecting room and slaughter-house furnished many of his materials. Frankenstein explains that he had been forced to make the monster much larger than a normal man—he estimates it to be about eight feet tall—because of the difficulty in replicating the minute parts of the human body. After giving the monster life, Frankenstein is disgusted by and fearful of the monster's appearance. There are wild animals to face and earthquakes to survive, as well as a hunter named Balderan, who has targeted Ayla for death, and a potential cave-wrecker named Marona. While gazing on an elaborate cave painting (presumably, the Lascaux caverns in France), Ayla has an epiphany and invents the concept of art appreciation, and after she overdoses on a hallucinogenic root, Ayla and Jondalar come to understand how much they mean to one another, thus giving birth to another concept—monogamy. Otherwise, not much of dramatic interest happens, and Ayla, for all her superwomanish ways, remains unfortunately flat. Two migrant field workers in California during the Great Depression—George Milton, an intelligent and cynical man, and Lennie Small, an ironically-named man of large stature and immense strength but limited mental abilities—come to a ranch near Soledad southeast of Salinas, California to "work up a stake." They hope to one day attain their shared dream of settling down on their own piece of land. Lennie's part of the dream, which he never tires of hearing George describe, is merely to tend to (and touch) soft rabbits on the farm. George protects Lennie at the beginning by telling him that if Lennie gets into trouble George won't let him "tend them rabbits." They are fleeing from their previous employment in Weed where they were run out of town after Lennie's love of stroking soft things resulted in an accusation of attempted rape when he touched a young woman's dress.
